A passing thought

Sometimes, half way through a backbending class with Geeta, I think about pretending I’m menstruating. 😉

Medical Class, Part 2

iyengar assisting setu bandha 4A young woman was hanging in rope Sirsasana when Guruji came over.  Instructions were given to bring a table.  He told her how to hold the sides of the table moving her into an intense backbend.

“Head up, chest down!”
“Head up, chest down!”

She groans.

The pose is repeated. Guruji walks on.

“What is the ailment?”  I ask a senior teacher.

“I am not here to tell you anything, ask her.” She points to the student and walks away.

The young woman comes down from the pose and sits.  I ask her.

She signals me to wait, still recovering from the pose. Then she reaches for my hand, looks me in the eyes and says, “The heart.  Guruji’s helping me with my heart.”

Medical Class – Part I

ImageGuruji made several rounds to each student adjusting and occasionally smacking students and teachers.  Each time he smacked someone I jumped. A senior teacher looked at me quizzically, wordlessly.

A woman with scoliosis had two straps on her torso, one below the armpits the other on the ribs just below the chest. An Iyengar yoga pad was placed on the dorsal spine under the straps.  She was in Ardha Uttanasana with her arms stretched forward on the trestle, hips drawn back forming a right angle.  Guruji came over looked at her and smacked her on the back. The convexity dropped, the back was balanced.

7 hours in a Rickshaw, Part III – Time

motorcycle footwear 8

Seven hours in a rickshaw gives you a lot of time to ponder important things in life, such as the array of footwear (or lack of footwear) used while driving scooters and motorcycles in India.

There are the business men who wear appropriate ‘business’ shoes and the occasional cowboy boot, but mostly I was interested in the lack of sturdy footwear.

Me: What if the driver has to put his foot down unexpectedly when he’s wearing flip-flops?

Driver: What are flip-flops?

Me: Flimsy shoes.

Driver: What is flimsy?

Sigh….

Me: Look, those, right there, see.

Driver: Yes.

Me: Well?

Driver: Yes?

Me: Well, what if they have to put their foot down unexpectedly?  They are going to ruin their foot!

Driver: That doesn’t happen.

Sigh….

7 hours in a Rickshaw, Part II – The Pune Fire Temple

Image

The fire has been burning in this temple since 1844.  I thought it would be a fascinating place to visit.  When I got to the temple I was told that only Zoroastrians can visit the fire.  Only male Zoroastrians.  I had two strikes against me.

I can be very persistent and kept presenting numerous reasons, to the very patient security guard, why I should be allowed to enter the temple.  There must be a way for me to see this fire that has been burning for over a 170 years.

Finally he gets up and signals for me to wait.  He walks toward the temple and begins speaking with an older gentleman who was sitting in a chair in front of the temple entrance.  The man listens, gets up, and comes over to me.  He greets me and tells me his story.

This is a very important place for the Zoroastrian people. I am Zoroastrian and have spent many years praying inside the temple.

It is a deeply spiritual place, a holy place, a pure place, and the fire has been kept burning by priests who have never let the fire die out, not once.  I watched this for many years.

Then I got cancer, the doctors took one of my kidneys, part of my stomach, and most of my intestines.  I now have a bag where all of my ‘impurities’ from inside my body flow into this bag.  I am not pure and I am no longer allowed to enter the temple.  So I sit on the porch daily to pray and I am content to do so because the temple must be kept clean from impurities.

So you see, this is why you cannot enter.

I thanked him and took a photo of this wonderful man who told me about his family, his life and struggles, and shared with me the depth of his faith.

This meant more to me than seeing the fire that has been burning for over a 170 years.

‘God Bless’, he said.

‘God Bless and thank you’, I said.

7 hours in a Rickshaw, Part I – Dehu

I gave Amin a list of places I wanted to visit. He looked and said.  “This place is very far.  It’s an hour outside of Pune.  Do you want to go?”

Sure.

We headed off to Dehu to visit the Sant Tukeram Temple.

Sometimes you need to close your eyes when driving in a rickshaw in the city; the narrow misses can be heart-stopping.  Once you are on the highway, a rickshaw is a peaceful place.  The lack of doors brings an openness not afforded in cars, you can connect with people next to you when the traffic slows, brief conversations can be had with families on motorcycles, food can be purchased, photos can be taken.  I think I want a rickshaw.

My driver went to park and I went into the temple.  It’s not the temple I had expected to visit.  This was a small, intimate temple along the river crowded with people.

When I came out I didn’t see my driver so I took a walk along the river.  I watched people washing their clothes, took photos, made small talk with my 10 words of Hindi.

We laughed, I was decorated with a tilak, and finally wandered back to where I last saw my driver.  He was pacing back and forth looking a little panicked, “I thought I lost you”, he said.

Naming ceremony

What an honor to be invited.  India has so many beautiful traditions. I didn’t know that photos would be allowed so these were taken with my 0 megapixel phone 😉Image
